Origami in the Garden

I'm the proud participant of a "birthday club". What does this have to do with Origami you ask? My birthday club buddies and I gather 3 times a year to celebrate birthdays that roughly land in the same month to spend an entire day celebrating. See Birthday Club Tips. 

Last week we celebrated by heading straight to the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum for Origami in the Garden. (see photos below). Suffice it to say this surpassed any expectations I had and we spent around 2-3 hours strolling the gardens and visiting the garden shop. The woman we were celebrating spent her work life doing just about everything in retail there is to do, and she validates this as a must stop garden shop.

Origami in the Garden is a monumental outdoor sculpture exhibit and mixed media indoor exhibit, created by Santa Fe artists Jennifer and Kevin Box, that captures the delicate nature of this paper art form in museum-quality metal. The exhibit features Box's own compositions and collaborations with world-renowned origami artists Tim Armijo, Te Jui Fu, Beth Johnson, Michael G. LaFosse, and Robert J. Lang.

WHAT IS ORIGAMI

The word "origami" comes from two Japanese words, "ori," which means folding and "kami," which means paper. Origami is the word used to describe the ancient art of creative paper folding, which is practiced around the world. The goal of the art is to transform a flat sheet of paper into a 3D sculpture using folding techniques alone. It has influenced science, architecture, package design and fashion.
