W3 Book Club - “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens
by Teri Popp & Laura Chin, Tastemakers in Residence
Bringing you tidings of great joy and Christmas spirit (and liquid spirits, too!), W3 Book Club celebrated the holiday season in true Victorian style with Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.” Hosts Jean and Jim festooned their home in bright colors and lights, and offered up an amazing meal for our consumption before we regaled their neighborhood while caroling with festive songs of the season!
W3 loves to dress the part for every book club meeting, and, while costumes may appear expensive, most members actually raid their closets and piece together items from their own wardrobes. Those that do buy additional pieces tend to stalk Amazon or Ragstock for inexpensive ensembles that just happen to photograph well!
Holidays tend to bristle with activity; therefore, the novella “A Christmas Carol” was a perfect choice as it’s both an easy, short read and a well-known story. Since December is the one month we include significant others and spouses in our book club revelry, we try to make everyone feel included in our “spirited” conversations regarding our current book du jour!!
Our hosts, Jim and Jean proved they were no Ebenezer Scrooge-type mizers by serving a sumptuous menu including:
Mixed Greens with Salmon and Toast Squares
Prime Rib
Mashed Potatoes
Brussels Sprouts
Bread Pudding with Cherries and Whipped Cream
So, if ever you wish to invoke the Ghosts of Past, Present, and Future at your next holiday get-together, consider Dickens’ classic for your holiday book club plans!
