Staying Grounded for the School Year

Labor Day marks the end of summer and the beginning of the school year.  Although I can’t quite put my finger on it, this time of the year brings a heightened sense of emotions.  Does it have to do with my boys advancing another year in school? Am I excited to see how they embrace the school year both academically and socially?  Will I meet their needs and help encourage or challenge them to new opportunities?  Oh, and that’s right, we are in the middle of a pandemic which will require us to embrace new routines and flexibility more than ever.  5

In times like this, I find it helpful to implement daily strategies for staying grounded or finding joy in the moment. I will share with you five practical tips for embracing each day.  These tips are an accumulation of ideas from books, speakers, podcasts, or other influences in my life. They truly bring a sense of peace in days that seem chaotic.

  1. Carry the attitude of “I get to do this” rather than “Do I have to do this?” Remember, you are never guaranteed tomorrow so even if it’s doing the dishes, do it joyfully!  Crank some tunes or have a kitchen dance party if it helps.

  2. Start each day with some quiet reflection time.  You can decide what this looks like for you.  Some ideas include journaling, keeping a daily gratitude list, and prayer or meditation.

  3. Be a “there you are” person rather than a “here I am” person.  Meaning, show interest in people around you rather than making it all about you.

  4. Focus on what others contribute rather than what they don’t.  I created a 100% rule for myself.  This means I can’t “call out” my kids or husband for not doing something unless I’m doing it all the time.

  5. Be intentional about spreading kindness. Remember, it doesn’t have to be a big act.  Simply, hold the door for someone, say “hello” to a passerby, or help a person carry their groceries to the car.

I challenge you to implement one tip that resonates with you.  Once you successfully practice it in your daily routine, add another.  Remember this…  if today was your last day, would you be proud of how you lived it?
