W3 Book Club-"Mank"--"Citizen Welles"
by Teri E. Popp & Laura Chin, Tastemakers in Residence- The movie “Mank” directed by David Fincher, and biography “Citizen Welles” written by Frank Brady.
To celebrate our first “in person” book club in-doors since before the pandemic began, the ladies of W3 Book Club enjoyed a movie night screening of “Mank,” a depiction of the writing of the epic movie “Citizen Kane” as told from the perspective of one of its writers, Herman J. Mankiewicz. Over 30 years in the making (due primarily, in part, because of numerous cast changes and funding), it stars Gary Oldman, Amanda Seyfried and Lily Collins and filmed in black & white, reminiscent of the movie “Citizen Kane.”
The ladies LOVE movie night, but we have a rule that any movie must have an accompanying work of either fiction or non-fiction. For this outing, we featured the book by Frank Brady, “Citizen Welles: A Biography of Orson Welles.” An in-depth analysis of Orson’s life from inception to death, I would definitely label this tome ‘the definitive biography’ of this prodigy’s life. From a precocious childhood and youth, to his aging years as an icon of filmography, it’s quite the overview of all things Orson Welles!
Because it was our first time together, in-person in almost a year, the ladies took out all the stops in their costuming and makeup. We barely calmed down long enough to actually watch the movie while munching on yummy treats provided by our host Muffy!
And, with that, we leave you with our one profound thought from that magnificent night: Rosebud!!
The ladies in all their splendor enjoy their first W3 Book Club together in a long time! Cheers to you!
