Spell Spring Release 2017

2015 vintage notes . . .

"The 2015 vintage was bittersweet.  As a whole the vintage produced some amazing wines, however the quantities are minuscule.  Growers were challenged by an extremely warm winter, a cool spring and a couple of heat waves in July and early August.  This resulted in an early harvest, reduced yields and intensely concentrated flavors."  - Andrew Berge, Winemaker

Spell Weir Vineyard Pinot Noir 2015
Yorkville Highlands | 145 cases produced

Winemaker Notes

This wine possesses that classic Weir Vineyard profile and may be one of the best representations from this winery to date. Bright aromas of Dr. Pepper, black cherry, dried ground sage, coffee, and fresh rose blossom fill the glass. Mid-weight flavors of cola, cocoa nib, and ripe red fruits coat the palette. The concentration and integration of tannin of this youthful wine truly speaks to the quality of the vintage. Exceptional now, but destined to age remarkably well.

Spell Umino Vineyard Pinot Noir 2015
Russian River Valley | 25 cases produced

Winemaker Notes

An inky purple color introduces this impressive wine. Intense aromas of roasted grains, ripe summer blackberries, vanilla crème, and violets fill the bowl. Flavors of ripe strawberries and blackberries are highlighted by hints of roasted coffee and cured meats. The finish processes youthful, silky tannins that dance gracefully with blue fruit and umami flavors, lengthened with balanced acidity. Extremely pleasing now, but like all of the Spell single vineyard wines; designed to age. Drink now or over the next 10 years.

Winemaker Notes

A color of fresh cut red beets introduces aromas of black cherry, black tea, and peanut skins. Flavors of ripe raspberry, black cherry, tea, dried herbs, cocoa nib swim across the tongue. Ripe, fine grained tannins mingle with ripe red fruits on a rich, lingering finish. Tremendously pleasing, but designed to age. Drink now, or over the next 5 to 10 years.

Spell Nichole's Blend Pinot Noir 2015

Winemaker Notes

A deep ruby red color leads into youthful aromas of ripe raspberry, Bing cherry, nutmeg, Madagascar chocolate, and dried herbs. A complex array of flavors decorated by sappy red fruit and sassafras are tied together with bright cranberry and notes of blood orange. Velvety, silk tannins frame lingering flavors of ripe raspberry on a minerally tinged finish. Drink now, or over the next 5 to 7 years.

Spell Chardonnay 2015
Russian River Valley | 150 cases produced

Winemaker Notes

A hazy golden-green color introduces aromas of ripe green apple skin, peaches, orange oil, red velvet cake, and reductive crushed rocks. A creamy blend of lemon curd, green apple, ripe pear, stone fruit and toasted oats sweep across the palate. Extremely soft and seductive on the palate, the finish is heightened by bright acidity and savory minerality. More concentrated and fruit forward than previous vintages this should be another exceptional wine. Enjoy now over the next 2 – 4 years.

Vinification

Vineyard: Dutton Sullivan Vineyard

Spell Rosé of Pinot Noir 2016
Sonoma County | 343 cases produced

Winemaker Notes

Slightly deeper in color than the 2015 vintage, the 2016 Spell Rosé maintains a rich salmon color.  Aromas of white strawberry, watermelon rind, peach pit and a smoky minerality fill the glass.  Refreshing flavors of fresh spring strawberries, honeydew melon and raspberries are bound by tangy acidity and a smooth, lingering finish.  Those of you who are familiar with previous vintages won’t be disappointed.  Serve chilled and drink now or over the next eight months.
